Position, Data, and a Blustery November: Aero Testing with Mattie Dodd

Position, Data, and a Blustery November: Aero Testing with Mattie Dodd

Posted on February 19, 2026

On 17 November 2025, British rider Mattie Dodd visited one of Streamlines' home test sites near Bicester to put his time trial position under the microscope. The session was run by Streamlines' own John Hale on a 1 km course. We would like to give a special thanks to Mattie Dodd for allowing us to publish these results, which give an insight into how top UCI teams are using the Streamlines system for rider development.

The goal was to refine Mattie's position by systematically varying stack height and reach on Dodd's TT bike. Over the course of the session, six configurations were tested, from an 80 mm stack baseline down to 45 mm, and with reach adjustments from maximum rearward to maximum forward.

It was not a calm day. Regional weather stations recorded gusts of up to 50 km/h — measured at the standard meteorological height of 10 m above ground level. On the bike, however, the natural shelter provided by trees and hedgerows along the course reduced effective wind speeds to around 7–8 km/h, producing yaw angles between 5 and 7 degrees, with temperatures hovering in low single figures — a typically blustery British November. This is exactly the kind of day where conventional outdoor aero testing struggles, but where Streamlines' wind models come into their own. The system delivered a coefficient of variation of just 0.70% and a standard deviation of 0.0016 across the session — tighter than many wind tunnel repeat tests.

The results told a clear story. Dropping from the 80 mm baseline stack to either 45 mm or 70 mm saved roughly 6–7 watts at 50 kph, equivalent to around 14–16 seconds over a 40 km time trial. Interestingly, the 45 mm and 70 mm stack positions produced almost identical CdA values of 0.228 — suggesting Dodd could take the more comfortable 70 mm option without sacrificing any aerodynamic advantage. Shifting the reach forward by one spacer on the same 80 mm stack saved a smaller but measurable 3 watts, while moving to maximum rearward reach on 80 mm stack produced no change at all. The best overall position — 70 mm stack with maximum rearward reach — combined the lower stack benefit with a CdA of 0.228 and a 6-watt saving.

Not long after this test, Dodd's trajectory took a significant step forward. In December 2025, the 21-year-old was announced as part of the newly formed INEOS Grenadiers Racing Academy — the British-registered UCI Continental development team launched to identify and nurture the next generation of WorldTour talent.
